Citigroup Leverages AI to Streamline Operations, Saving 100,000 Weekly Developer Hours
Citigroup Inc. has significantly expanded its use of artificial intelligence, achieving dramatic efficiency gains across its operations. The bank's AI systems now complete complex coding tasks in minutes—work that previously required top developers over a week. Automated code review alone saves approximately 100,000 developer hours weekly, equivalent to 2,500 full-time employees.
CEO Jane Fraser likened the transformation to the advent of the dishwasher during a Riyadh event. "The outcome remains the same, but the process is fundamentally reimagined," she noted. Citigroup is applying AI to credit decisions, marketing, and customer service, with the technology even assisting managers in drafting performance reviews.
While acknowledging AI's potential to enhance risk management, Fraser cautioned about emerging risks. The bank's MOVE system has reportedly generated widespread enthusiasm among staff for its productivity enhancements.
